About the product:
A friction mallet, also called a "flumie," is designed to extract long, sustained tones and rich harmonics from a gong.
Consisting of a thin plastic or wooden handle and a special silicone rubber head, the flumie is used by gently sliding the head over the surface of the gong.
The E-shaped silicone rubber head of this flumie distinguishes it for its ability to explore a wide variety of sounds. This design makes it particularly effective at producing distinct resonances, ranging from "whale sounds" to sustained tones.
This movement creates subtle vibrations that make the gong resonate, similar to the technique used to make a Tibetan bowl “sing.”
Flumies come in various shapes and sizes, each bringing its own distinct vibrations to the gong. Used individually or in combination, they allow for dynamic and meditative playing.
How to play?
Hold the flumie near the silicone head and grip it lightly between your thumb and the inside of your index finger.
Do not overtighten the handle: the flumie must be able to move freely to generate vibrations.
With a relaxed grip, gently slide the head across the surface of the gong without applying pressure. Vibrations will gradually build.
It is normal for the sound not to be triggered immediately: patience is part of the process. Once the sound appears, let the gong "bloom" to allow the sound to fully develop.
When you're comfortable, vary your grip. Holding the flumie further away from your head can produce lower tones, although generating vibrations is more difficult.
Similarly, using different sized flumies allows for varying pitches: larger heads produce lower tones, while smaller heads generate higher tones.
In this way, each flumie greatly increases the variety of possible sounds. We strongly recommend purchasing several to experiment.
