Grape agate, also known as botryoidal chalcedony, is a variety of chalcedony , consisting of quartzcrystallites and having a botryoidal morphology (i.e. formed of small joined balls reminiscent of a bunch of grapes ).
Analyses, particularly by Raman spectroscopy , show that it is not an agate , contrary to what its commercial name implies.
It is very often purple in color, less often white, gray, green or blue 2 .
