Presentation
A Fundamental Tone Instrument , the Shruti Box (or Surpeti ) is a traditional Indian musical instrument, designed to produce a continuous drone .
It works on the same principle as a harmonium, but without a keyboard .
Its use is particularly appreciated for vocal accompaniment , voice tuning, or even sound meditation .
Technical Characteristics
- C to c' over 3 octaves (bass, medium, treble), or 36 tones .
- Dimensions : 41 × 32 × 8.5 cm
- Weight : 5.90 kg
- Sound : Reminiscent of an accordion , soft but powerful.
- Finish : Careful and professional handcrafted.
- Structure : Wooden sound box with manual bellows (leather or cardboard).
- Sound system : Several single brass reeds (4 to 16), which can be opened or closed individually to create specific chords or drones.
Use
The Shruti Box is used as a singing guide in vocal teaching or for practicing Indian classical singing (Carnatic or Hindustani).
It can replace the tampura , the harmonium, or the drone of wind instruments like the shehnai or the nâgasvaram.
Commonly used in concerts , especially alongside a tampura.
