What causes the color of ammolites?
- Ammolites are composed of a variety of chemicals, including aluminum, chromium, copper, and iron, but unlike other gemstones, this does not cause the wide range of colors they display.
- The color is caused by interference, much like what you've probably seen in soap bubbles or oil in a puddle.
- The surface of ammolite reflects a variety of beautiful colors when illuminated by natural or artificial light.
- The color it shows depends on the thickness of the ammolite - we're talking thicknesses of just a few microns, but this has a huge effect on the colors we see.
- Thinner surfaces have a little more distance to travel than slightly thicker layers, plus light waves from these different depths interfere with each other, producing all the different colors displayed.
- Thicker layers produce reds and greens and are more durable, thinner layers highlight blues and purples and are more delicate and prone to breakage, so they are less common and more valuable.
- Each color of ammolite represents a different layer of the gem material.
