Its name comes from the Greek chrysos ("gold") and kolla ("glue"), as it was once used to solder gold. In ancient times, it was considered a stone of wisdom and eloquence: Cleopatra is said to have worn it to promote fair and peaceful communication. It is also called the "orators' stone."
