The five solids were used by the Greek philosopher Plato (400 BC) to symbolize the five elements of the World.

There is :

• the earth represented by the Cube
• water by the Icosahedron
• fire by the Tetrahedron
• the air by the Octahedron and
• the Universe embodied by the Dodecahedron.
  
  - Why only 5 platonic solids?

There are only five Platonic solids due to their requirement to have equal polygonal faces whose internal angles add up to less than 360 degrees when the angle is multiplied by the number of polygons that meet at the vertices.

The ancient scholar Plato believed that the universe was constructed from five solids. Four of these represented earth, air, water, and fire, while the rest were "the fifth element."

This is why they are called the Platonic solids.
