👉 Moldavite is a glassy material that can form during a meteorite impact , as in the case of Czech moldavite, the Ries impact in the Langhian period 14.4 million years ago. The connection with the Ries has been proven by experiments on the age of these tektites and on projectiles subjected to high acceleration.
The impact melts the silicates into glassy-looking molten tektites, produced by the high temperature. Geologists and crystallographers believe that these tektites form in milliseconds , when the molten top layer of the Earth's surface is ejected at very high speed into billions of fragments that solidify into natural glasses of olive to dark green hue. Moldavite is mined and sold as an ornamental stone, cut and polished, sometimes under the name chrysolite or pseudo-chrysolite.
