👉 These very special stones come from China, found in limestones dating back to the Lower Permian period (270 to 300 million years ago). The exact deposit is the Daxi River, near Yonghe, Liuyang County, Hunan Province. As the name suggests, the special feature of these stones is that they resemble chrysanthemum flowers, making them exceptional decorative objects.
In Chinese culture, the chrysanthemum symbolizes longevity and is also an official symbol of the imperial family, which explains why these stones are highly sought after in China.
These are in fact sheaves of celestite crystals with a little calcite which are embedded in a darker limestone rock. These crystals are freed from their matrix by grinding or sandblasting to reveal the "chrysanthemum flower".
The limestone of these small pieces is often tinted black for better contrast. The larger pieces are simply freed from their matrix by sandblasting and thus the flower appears in volume on the limestone.
Already very difficult to obtain given Chinese demand, these stones are expected to become even rarer, as the deposit from which they come will be flooded when the Hunan dam is filled in 2024.
