Wiccans, Pagans, and Witches of all times and traditions used symbols for many purposes, such as rituals, spells, ceremonies, and in everyday life.

There are many different symbols with many meanings.

Each symbol has a basic meaning, but they all mean different things and represent different feelings and actions to different people.

Meaning of the six symbols:

The five-pointed star within a circle is the most common Pagan symbol, and it is generally used to identify oneself as a Pagan or Wiccan.

The five points represent the four elements, plus spirit, and the circle connects them.

A five-pointed star outside the circle is sometimes called a pentagram, rather than a pentacle. Based on numerology, the five points mean that the pentagram symbolizes the element of Earth and can be used as an earth symbol on an altar.

The triple moon is a symbol that represents the Virgin, Mother, and Crone goddess, as a waxing, full, and waning moon. It is also associated with feminine energy, mystery, and psychic abilities. You often see this symbol on crowns or other hats particularly favored by high priestesses.

The brief and traditional meaning for the Ankh symbol is "eternal life."

This symbol is a hieroglyph seen in countless ancient Egyptian sculptures, usually held in the hand by gods and pharaohs to show how they preside over life (in other words, are immortal).

In these images, the ankh is held by the loop rather than the base.

The ankh is a popular symbol among Pagans, probably due to the similarity to a Christian cross which makes the ankh much less offensive to others, compared to a pentacle.

The symbol of the Horned God (sun and moon) is often used in Wicca to represent the masculine energy of the God. It is a symbol of the archetype, as often seen in Cernussos Herne, and other gods of vegetation and fertility.

In some feminist Wiccan traditions, such as branches of Dianism, this symbol is actually representative of the July "Horned Moon" (also known as a Moon of Benedictio), and is connected to lunar goddesses.

In terms of spirituality, the spiral symbol can represent the path leading from outer consciousness (materialism, external awareness, the ego, outer perception) to the inner soul (enlightenment, the invisible essence, nirvana, cosmic consciousness).

The movements between the inner (immaterial, intuitive) and outer (matter, manifest) worlds are mapped by the spiral of archetypal rings; marking the evolution of humanity on both an individual and collective scale.

Furthermore, in terms of rebirth or growth, the spiral symbol can represent the awareness of nature starting from the base or center and thus expanding outward. This is the way of all things, as most mystics have recognized.

To gain a broader appreciation of the significance of the spiral, we can consider its appearance in the natural world.

The symbol of the Horned God is often overlooked in Wicca, because people seem to believe that Wicca is a religion strictly of goddesses only.

While this may be true in some cases (the tradition of Dianism), one of the main foundations of Wicca is the balance between all things: light/dark, love/hate, positive/negative, chalice/sword… goddess/god.
